is a student organization founded over 40 years ago by the late John F. Kennedy Jr. and former U.S. Representative David Cicilline (RI-1) when they were students at Brown University. We are Brown’s hub for progressive student activism, civic engagement, and political discussion. We are committed to advancing the ideals of the Democratic Party while cultivating a welcoming, inclusive, and action-oriented community on campus and beyond.
Our Goals
Support Democratic candidates and progressive legislation at all levels of government.
Empower students to engage meaningfully in political and civic life through campaign work, lobbying, and community service.
Host discussions, events, and forums that foster critical thinking about today’s most pressing political and policy issues.
Build a diverse, inclusive space that reflects the values we fight for.
What We Do
Whether it’s organizing voter registration drives, hosting guest speakers and debates, or canvassing in key elections, Brown Dems is a space where students become leaders, organizers, and change-makers. We collaborate with like-minded campus groups, advocate for causes we care about, and create opportunities for students to get involved through actions such as:
Phone banking
Canvassing
Testifying
Protesting
Running Internship Match
Forming Caucuses
Hosting the Annual JFK Jr. Awards for Inspiring Youth in Politics
Offering informational sessions
Membership is open to all Brown students who share a commitment to Democratic values and a desire to make a difference. Whether you’re a seasoned activist or just politically curious, we invite you to get involved.
Join us and organize, advocate, and educate—together!
